SOMALIA TODAY.
Somalia (a member of the United Nations, African Union, Arab League, Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) having close ties with Turkey, Qatar, USA, UK, Egypt, and with neighboring countries) is rich in culture, diverse, and deeply rooted in its nomadic and Islamic tradition, shaped by the country’s history, Islamic faith, lifestyle, and coastal trade influences. Key aspects of Somali culture include emphasizing family, respect for elders, and a strong oral tradition, with poetry and storytelling playing vital roles. While traditional practices remain important, especially in rural areas, modern influences are also shaping Somali culture.
Somali is the official language and the only language spoken in Somalia and parts of its neighboring countries specially regions with Ethnic Somali communities. Arabic is also widely used and in religious contexts. English is used in higher education as language of instruction. Somalis are clan-based society in which it plays a role in people’s identity background, country’s political and social structure. Somalis are known for their strong hospitality, generosity, and respect for elders, women and youngsters. Social gatherings, especially involving food and storytelling, are important to preserve history and teach values.
